I single parented five children and was working multiple jobs in the field of education (all levels) when the pandemic made me stop in my tracks. For the first time, in a long time, I took a breath. I literally was in dismay at how long a minute could last. I channel surfed and landed on P. Allen Smith's youtube channel. I binge watched all the episodes and went on to some of my other favorites for gardening. Then, I started listening to podcasts and watching floral design videos. I had to become part of this beautiful world where people are environmentally aware and positively contribute to the well-being of this world. I remarried the love of my life, Ken, in June of 2021. He is a pillar of strength and has helped me for 17 years. I was amazed at the limited resources available for floral design in Southern Illinois. A dream began to form in my mind, frequently late at night, about becoming a cut flower farmer and wedding floral designer. Last May (2022) I took a step toward working less by retiring from public education. My children are now adults. And so, I am now on this journey to become a resource for couples in Southern Illinois who want local flowers and inspiring designs for their weddings. My passion is strong, as I have now planted 95 rose bushes, many of which are heirloom roses, 1400 tulip bulbs, daffodils, peonies, sweet peas, and lilies. I also have ordered many lisianthus plugs, gladiolus corms, dahlias, zinnias, sunflowers, baby's breath, strawflowers, pincushions, etc. My goal is to eliminate lawn grass, although I love ornamental grasses. This coming spring and summer will be amazing! So, the beginning of a new chapter in my life begins and I am filled with hope and happiness!
